
" I am convinced that the only way we create economic growth is by providing the energy necessary for humans to manipulate it, and then create wealth. Modern energy provision is a function of the installed power capacity. Of course, the provision of energy is a necessary, but not sufficient, condition for economic growth and wellbeing.
Without human ingenuity there would be no purpose to which to harness this energy. But too often, I think, we want to fix all the higher level things, like education, politics, non-energy infrastructure etc, without considering the energy system that has to drive all this effort – except perhaps as an afterthought. In other words, we think that human ingenuity and systems come first, and then energy systems are built to cater for the wonderful plans we have made.
