The zones are based on a Strategic Environmental Assessment which was conducted by the CSIR and which took various factors into account, integrating environmental, economic and social factors in order to identify geographical areas (the REDZs) where wind and solar projects will have the LOWEST possible impact on the environment while yielding the HIGHEST possible social and economic benefit to the country.
The map shows the 8 REDZs as well as the distribution of applications for environmental authorisation for renewable energy related projects across the country as at the latter part of 2015.
