This year will see several wind farms starting to supply electricity as part of the Independent Power Producers programme.
But, electricity generation with solar energy is also taking shape now with the 50 megawatt De Aar solar plant which is due to come on line shortly.
South Africa's climate also makes it an ideal candidate for solar energy production, as reiterated by Director of the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany, Professor Eicke Weber.
Weber says that South Africa is well equipped to provide solar energy to northern Africa.
Meanwhile, a solar energy roadmap for South Africa is also under review and is due to be finalised later this year. Deputy Director-General at the Department of Science and Technology, Mboweni Moufhe says that solar energy is central to diversification.
