Cornelis van der Waal is the Business Unit Leader for the African Energy and Power Systems Business Unit at Frost & Sullivan.
He has over seven years consulting and market research with a particular focus on market intelligence analysis, growth strategy formulation, customer benchmarking, channel distribution, mentoring, business planning and implementation.
Since being with Frost & Sullivan he has completed numerous projects with multinational companies in Africa focusing on energy and related sectors.
Cornelis holds a BCOM (Hons) and a MBA obtained from the Stellenbosch Business School, South Africa.
Paul Eardley-Taylor is responsible for Standard Bank’s Oil & Gas sector coverage activities for Southern Africa, across upstream, midstream, downstream, services and process clients. He has 16 years of energy investment banking experience, covering the Oil & Gas, Power & Utilities and Renewables & Carbon sub-sectors, and has been based in Africa for over 6 years. Paul has extensive experience of the SA/Southern African energy environment, as adviser and financier.
Paul holds degrees from Birmingham University; London University and a MBA from Henley Management College. Paul is a Fellow of the Securities & Investment Institute, a member of the Energy Institute and has completed Harvard Business School’s Global Energy Seminar
Prof Jim Petrie is Energy Director in the Western Cape Dept of Economic Development and Tourism. In this role, he has oversight of all energy matters, and, more widely, their impact on promoting a Green Economy. This includes energy strategy, supply and demand imperatives, resource efficiency, and the waste economy.
A chemical engineer by background, with close to 40 years professional experience, Jim holds concurrent academic positions of Emeritus Professor at the University of Sydney, Australia, Honorary Professor at the University of Cape Town, and Visiting Professor at the University of Surrey, UK. He has particular interest in the promotion of system-analytic approaches to complex problems, based on life cycle thinking / life cycle management, and industrial ecology.
Dr Michael De Pontes is Chief Operating Officer of iGas (SOC) Pty Ltd, with a broad area of expertise including the management of a Gas Infrastructure Company, process and catalysis development and project implementation, methanol to fuels development plants and methanol to fuels commercial plant design.
He has been directly involved in the COD process plant at Mossel Bay and the catalyst plant at Richards Bay.
He has also been active with the South Africa Liquid Fuel formulation for the South African government working together with the motor industry and all the refining and synthetic fuel oil companies - low aromatic sulphur diesel introduction to South Africa.
Included in his areas of interest is Fischer-Tropsch technology development and renewable energy experience in wind and photovoltaic generation plants.
Paul Runge is MD of the specialised consulting firm Africa Project Access. His company supplies approximately 140 companies and organisations with early alerts of projects across a broad range of sectors in Sub-Saharan Africa. As a former diplomat, he served in Gabon and supervised projects in the Cape Verde Islands. He spent six years with the South African Foreign Trade Organisation and led many of the first South African business delegations into other African countries. He regularly undertakes assignments into Africa. He writes for several publications and has published Potholes & Profits: Business (& other) Conversations and Experiences from Africa.
Paul will be the Conference Chairman for GAS Africa 2014 and will lead the agenda and introduce the panel discussions during the course of the 2 day conference.
