In a cabinet reshuffle, president Jacob Zuma, head of South Africa’s ruling party has replaced the country’s minister of energy Dipuo Peters with Ben Martins who was minister of transport.
Peters in turn takes over Martins’ former portfolio as minister of transport. During her spell as minister of energy, Peters has been strongly supportive of green energy. In 2009, the year Peters became minister of energy in South Africa, the country’s government at the 15th Conference of the Parties (CoP 15) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) committed to an ambitious long term carbon emissions mitigation plan.
In 2011, South Africa adopted an integrated resource plan (IRP) for its electricity generation sector that if followed will see 42% of the new capacity built over the coming 20 years come from renewable energy sources, this amounting to some 17,800 MW.
