Overview
Africa is in the midst of a power crisis due to lack of efficient energy producing infrastructure and systems.
The need for economical electricity has, in recent years, sky rocketed. Consequently, highly efficient power generating plants such as combined cycle plants; co-generation, wind farms, gas turbines and solar power plants have to be introduced to compete against the older plants of established utilities. This will result in the erosion of the monopolistic electricity market that has been enjoyed by the operating utilities over the years.
Power utilities and independent power producers across Africa are currently in the process of constructing the alternative plants listed above. These alternative plants have shorter construction lead times and require lower capital investments.
They also have an advantage of long-term fuel stability, fuel flexibility, minimal payback period, low staffing requirements, low operating and maintenance costs. Having them located closer to the power user will reduce transmission costs drastically and increase their reliability. The alternative power producing plants are, maybe most importantly, environmentally friendly in that they are twice as efficient as the older fossil and nuclear generating plants. With an anticipated shake up in the electricity market by these alternative plants, consumers are hoping that they will be the answer to most problems
brought about by the older electricity generating plants.
