Situated one hour north of Douglas, the land is now home to a huge 22-MW solar power plant named “The Herbert Project”.
This project and a second 11-MW park, Greenspan, were launched by Tenesol South Africa, now a subsidiary of SunPower. For the projects, the French company opted for the robust inverters offered by KACO new energy. A total of 900 Powador 39.0 TL3 three-phase inverters now ensure that maximum solar yields are obtained from the two large-scale plants, which form part of the South African government’s Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme.
The area around the two plants is nothing like the pictures you
see of South Africa’s coast in the holiday brochures. Here inland it
is hot, dry and dusty – which makes life tough for people, animals
and inverters alike. Whereas the first two can get by with water
or wine from the Cape, a Powador simply has to make do with
technology: a specially tuned piece of software and special filters
from our long-term partner ebm-pabst.
Following on from its role in supervising the technical commissioning
process, our KACO South Africa subsidiary will also be responsible
for operations and maintenance – providing full power
for the new South Africa.
