GREEN TECHNOLOGIES: WHY ARE SO MANY AGAINST INNOVATION?

Is it fear of change that drives those whom are skeptic of green technologies? Or do these individuals believe that their way is the only way? Maybe it’s more of a mix between a fear and a belief. There is no mistake that the Earth’s climate is changing on a global scale. While some areas are experiencing floods and record lows in temperatures, others are experiencing prolonged heat waves creating a new record for sustained heat. How can skeptics refuse to see the facts that are plainly visible for green technology?

1. Reduction of Bills – Solar panels that are installed with deep-cycle batteries can sustain a family home without the need of tapping the electricity grid. Once installed, you could possibly never see another bill from the power company again. For a family of four, this could literally save thousands of dollars in just a few years. How is that a premature technology? Grant it, installations could be more expensive than what many people in the country have budgeted. However, costs are continuing to drop for solar manufacturing and will only continue to become more efficient. The same can be said for wind generation.

2. Fuel-less Sources – Solar and wind require no fuel source in order to operate. In this statement, fuel is being referred to as an exhaustible substance through usage. Some may view the Sun as an exhaustible fuel source. If the Sun runs out of fuel for its own continuation, climate change will be the last of our worries. Wind isn’t technically exhaustible either as it will continue to blow whether a turbine is there or not. If the wind dies down, it’s not because it was exhausted by our power generation.

3. Sustainability – Maintaining current power levels requires a great deal of effort. Not only are mass quantities of fuel consumed annually in order to operate the traditional power plant, but fuel is also consumed in transportation and development of the source. Some skeptics will throw the fact that thousands of gallons of toxic water is created regularly by solar manufacturing and that the CO2 emissions from transportation vehicles to dispose of the waste adds to a carbon footprint. The same can be said about the transportation of coal, oil, and even nuclear pellets. However, once a solar array is erected, there is no further need for annual fuels or waste disposal – which makes the method sustainable beyond current methods of generating power.

4. Versatility – While solar may have more versatility that wind, renewable energy methods can be installed virtually anywhere without concerns from most communities. Solar panels can be used for everything from charging your cell phone to powering your home or business. Yet, skeptics will still be against using them. Panels can be purchased and arranged in any configuration to meet a vast array of needs by anyone willing to drive to a Radio Shack. Can supporters of nuclear power drive to the nearest Home Depot and pick up a reactor? Renewable energies put the power of energy independence within the hands of an individual – no pun intended.

Whether you believe man is contributing to climate change or not, it doesn’t refute that green technologies are developed for the improvement of your lifestyle. Water condensers, Energy Star compliance, solar and wind power generation, electric vehicles, organic foods and more are designed to encourage humankind’s sustainability on this planet regardless of the motives behind the development. You don’t have to be a tree-hugging hippy to embrace what sustainability can offer you as a person and/or your pocketbook.
