Perth-based energy exploration company Kinetiko Energy has started drilling the third of three gas wells at its South African Korhaan Project.

The three-well Korhaan Project is part of Kinetiko Energy’s five-well cluster at Amersfoort in Mpumalanga. With three new wells of the Korhaan project now successfully spudded, the company expects all five wells will become pilot-production wells, with commingled production to an infield offtake facility being planned.

It is estimated that the third well will reach a depth of 400-450m to test the gassy sandstones and coal bed methane horizons from the known coal beds that were intersected and observed from the tested gas wells 400 metres away. Korhaan-3 is being drilled with air/percussion and is the last of the wells programmed to be completed this year.

The drilling programme is about 400m from Kinetiko’s proposed gas collection terminal at Amersfoort where access and infrastructure are being established.

According to the company’s Board of Directors, they anticipate starting gas production in the first quarter of 2022. They also anticipate the small-scale production to be used by compressed natural gas distributors or gas electricity generators.

“The three Korhaan Project wells are still progressing for completion before Christmas. With all three now spudded it is estimated that Korhaan 4 and 5 will continue drilling through gassy zones next week and complete in early December,” said the Board of Directors.

Korhaan 4 well is expected to commence drilling into the gassy sandstone and underlying coal seams within the next few days and Korhaan 5 has completed casing to approximately 150 metres depth and is set up to complete cementing before continuing drilling.

Preliminary gas flow rates will be assessed as each well is completed.

Is there an accurate quantifiable comparison between "Natural gas" and "Coal" re CO2 emissions - and of course resurce sustainability
