Properly engineered, these fans move a massive amount of air where traditional, high velocity fans are rendered ineffective. The amount of air the fan moves increases at a much faster rate than the amount of power it takes to turn it as the size gets larger. Winter heat
Stratification occurs because hot air, which is approximately 5-7% lighter than cool air, tends to rise to the ceiling. In the winter months, operating at 10 to 30 percent of the maximum speed, HVLS fans successfully destratify tall spaces, mixing the warm air at the ceiling level with the cooler air at the occupant level creating a uniform temperature without a draft. Moving the hot air off the ceiling helps the heating system maintain the same thermostat setpoint with less effort, resulting in a serious reduction in operating costs and increased thermal comfort for occupants.
