The Greenest Municipality Competition (GMC), which has replaced the country’s cleanest town competition, is made up of five main considerations, with participation open to all South African municipalities.
Factors considered by an independent panel of judges include: waste management; energy efficiency and conservation; water management; landscaping, tree planting and beautification; and public participation and institutional arrangements.
The overall winners of the competition will receive R3.5 million, with second and third receiving R3 million and R2.5 million, respectively. This prize money will be given through the funding of infrastructure projects aimed at protection of the environment.
