Commissioning has been completed on all 60 Siemens turbines at the 138MW Jeffreys Bay wind farm in South Africa.
The project (pictured), which is sited between the towns of Jeffreys Bay and Humansdorp in the Kouga municipality of Eastern Cape, is on course for its target commercial operations date and began supplying power to Eskom in December last year. Its final turbine went up in February.
“We were one of the country’s first wind farms to be connected to the national grid and look forward to achieving commercial operations soon,” said Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm general manager Mark Pickering.
The facility covers 3700 hectares and is one of the first wind farms developed under the South African government’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme.
Jeffreys Bay Power is majority owned by Globeleq, Mainstream Renewable Power South Africa, Old Mutual, Thebe Investment Corporation, Jeffreys Bay Community Trust, Enzani Technologies and Usizo Engineering.
Siemens will maintain the turbines at the facility for 10 years.
